Sabina Rizvi was fatally shot outside a police station in March 2003, and Paul Asbury was convicted of her murder and the attempted murder of her boyfriend. An inquest has looked into whether police at the Bexleyheath police station were involved in what happened. The Rizvi family believed there was more to investigate beyond Asbury’s role.

Asbury, who accepted responsibility for the murder, did not disclose the identity of the two people who fired the shots. He claimed that Ms. Rizvi was unintentionally caught in the crossfire of an attack against her boyfriend, and refused to reveal more details. The former detective chief inspector leading the investigation found no evidence linking police officers to helping the suspects or disclosing information to Asbury about Williams’s whereabouts.

Ms. Rizvi had visited the police station to verify the authenticity of a car she had purchased days before, which unexpectedly led to a chain of events culminating in her tragic death. Asbury falsely claimed that his car had been carjacked, leading to an exchange of phone calls with police, ultimately resulting in Ms. Rizvi and Mr. Williams being involved in the investigation.

The inquest heard about previous interactions between Asbury and the police station, including claims of threats and affiliations with criminal activities. The emotional toll on Ms. Rizvi’s family has been significant, with her mother suffering from severe PTSD and depression following her daughter’s death. The inquest was initially opened in 2003 and reopened in 2019, coping with delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The family has been seeking closure through the inquest, hoping to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Ms. Rizvi’s death. Despite Asbury’s admission of guilt, questions remain about the involvement of other individuals in the crime. As the jury deliberates over the evidence presented during the hearing, the tragic events of that night in 2003 continue to impact those who knew and loved Sabina Rizvi. The outcome of the inquest is awaited to provide some semblance of justice for the family and to help understand the full extent of what led to this senseless act of violence.
